A ball is dropped from affects the re-bounce of it Essay Example for Free

A ball is dropped from affects the re-bounce of it Essay Analysis:As the results and the graph attached overleaf shows, the line of best fit indicates that my prediction was correct, although due to experimental error it is not exact. However, as the end column displaying the percentage loses shows, although the percentage losses vary they are all around the same point. I think air resistance did have an affect and slow the ball down, this meant it was unable to pick up a lot of speed, meaning it didnt have much kinetic energy and what it did have was lost when it was still for a split second as it squashed; released more energy in the form of heat. Therefore the percentage loss increases near the end as the drop height increases. I think that my prediction about the percentage loss was right because the end column shows no big anomalies, which means that the ball was constantly losing the same amount of energy wherever I drop the ball. This indicates that the air resistance did not have as bid affect as I thought. Towards the end of my experiment, the graph shows a clear place where a factor influenced my results. The last three points are some what away form the trend of the rest; this could be because I had reached a point where terminal velocity concluded. I think this because they are significantly lower than the rest of the points. This leads me to believe that air resistance had an affect of the bounce height due to terminal velocity no longer being in control. These last results are anomalies as they do not follow the trend of the rest, and are notably away from the line of best fit. I would expect to get a result of approximately 22 when dropping from one metre; however I actually got about 21. 5. consequently, I believe Moreover, I expected that if I dropped it from 100cm it would be double that of the bounce from 50cm. This was incorrect, as 12. 3 x 2 does not equal 20. 407. I believe this was because in this case air resistance did have an affect, or the heat I expected to transfer from my hand did not, maybe due to it me doing the experiment in the middle of winter. On the other hand, in my prediction I stated that the bounce height would increase as the drop height increases, and the straight line defiantly shows this. In my opinion, at the end of the graph, the gradient increases causing a steeper end to the graph. This is probably because I did these heights at the end of the experiment, therefore the ball will have had time to warm up, causing the molecules inside to move around and make the outer edge of the ball harder, meaning it bounces higher. I believe that my graph does not have a very steep gradient due to that when I drop the ball higher; the friction against the air coincidently increased. I decided to draw my graph from the origin point, as that is the only point of the graph that is free of experimental error, as you cant drop a ball from nothing and expect it to bounce, as it has no GPE. Evaluation: Overall, I do not think this experiment was very reliable, as there were so many factors that were out of my control to manage. These were such things as the air temperature, the air resistance, heat, and the pressure inside the ball. The air temperature could have affected the activity of the molecules inside the ball, and brought into action the Kinetic theory. The kinetic theory is that of the molecules gaining more energy and exerting it on moving around, consequently colliding with each other and making the ball harder due to the increase in the pressure. This may have made the ball bounce harder as it got hotter through the experiment. Although I said pressure would be one of my controls, I did not take into account the pressure building up due to the heat transferred. Moreover, I could not control the air resistance, although this should have stayed constant, I cant be sure. If the air temperature increased through the experiment, maybe because of the body heat given off, it would mean that the air resistance increased. This is because the heat gives the molecules energy, so the ball would have to use more energy to push past them. This energy is then lost, and means that the ball does not have as much energy as it would if it were cooler. Furthermore, I think because we used our eyesight to determine the height of the re-bounce, this made our results even more unreliable. Yet, on-the-other-hand, I also think my results were as reliable as could I could get them. This is due to the limited time and equipment. For instance, because we used a clamp and stand to hold up the ruler, it made the results trustworthier than someone holding it up. Also, the only thing we varied was the height we dropped the ball, everything else was kept exactly the same, for example, the ball we used, and the surface we worked on. Whats more, I followed the procedure correctly and missed nothing out. I measured the height of the re-bounce from the bottom of the ball instead of the top, as when we dropped it the bottom was inline with the top of the ruler. Moreover, because I got an average, it reduced the affect of anomalous results, which meant my result are unlikely to be flawed due to me as the dropper. I do not think the way I measured the height was very accurate, as it depends on individual eyesight, and everyones level of eyesight is different. Although, they way I dropped the ball, and how we went about trying to record the closest measurement was accurate. This is because I used only my finger and thumb to hold the ball, this was to pass as little heat over as possible, and stop dropping the ball with an added force. I believe this worked, as on my graph there are no obvious anomalies, the line is not straight, but that is due to only a small bit of experimental error. If I repeated the experiment there would be lots of things that I would do differently. I would conduct the experiment on the floor instead of on the bench, as maybe the increase G. P. E on the bench influenced my results. Also, I would find some way of controlling the air temperature, and the air resistance, although this would have to be done outside of the lab. I think that the temperature and the air resistance did have an effect on my results as the percentage of energy lost increased as I dropped the ball from higher positions. Moreover, I would find a way to measure the level of the re-bounce that would be more dependable than using my own eyesight. This is because, as I have said, eyesight is not consistent as things such as the light intensity, which may affect the recording of the results, can influence it. Furthermore, I would increase my drop heights to 200cm, as I think if I carried on longer, my graph would show a definite point where terminal velocity came into action, and also that that graph would perhaps increase its gradient as the ball got hotter through the experiment. This would be useful as it would mean my results could be analysed further and draw a conclusion more valid. Although, if I did do the investigation again, I would keep the squash ball in my experiments. I believe it gave reliable results subject to the terms and conditions that applied freely. Also, I would use the same unit of measurements, as they showed the results clearly and were more appropriate than other methods. I could repeat the experiment under converse conditions by for instance changing the surface, or the air temperature. I could also vary the ball I used, as this would allow me to compare different bounce heights from the same drop height. This would mean I could calculate the efficiency of the balls I used. Whats more I could change how I measure the height it bounces back, or actually what I measure. I could measure the efficiency of the ball, and how the height I drop it from affects the amount of energy is lost.

Salvador Dali, Dadaism and Surrealism

Salvador Dali, Dadaism and Surrealism Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings The human mind is a very controlling device and organ. However it is not perfect in the way it processes things. Illusions for instance are visual stimuli that swindle the brain because the brain cannot process all visual imagery accurately. Why do we see puddles form up on the road whilst driving on a hot day? Why do certain parts of a drawing look bigger while in actually fact they are smaller? There have been numerous artists that have used illusions in their works, Scott Kim, M.C Escher, but what really brought fame to the surrealists in the 1990s? The Spanish painter Salvador Dali. A small amount has had such an impact on society as the eccentric painter whose paintings obsessed audiences for many years. Dali was immensely popular in the art community for his originality in work, and several of his paintings now stand as icons for his era. Dali was admired by the public because he embraced innovative ideas of the time, many of which were integrated into his works as well as his life. He continued to implement new ideas as times changed, which allowed him to keep his popularity within the public and art enthusiasts, possibly making him one of the most distinguished artists of the 1990s. Salvador Dali (Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dali i Domenech) born in May 1904, in a minute town of figueres, in a region known as Catalonia. His parents gave him a lot of support as a young child, his first studio built for him at a very young age. Dali knowing that his parents recognised his potential from very early on gave him full support, until he reached the San Fernando Academy of fine arts in Madrid. All of Dalis life he was distressed by many issues and complications, such as the death of his wife gala and the war, resulting in him being put in a state of paranoia. Nevertheless, he related to these problems, and his paintings gave him an opening in such ways that allowed him to express his feelings to a great extent, this also gave the public a viewing insight into his work, by examining his paintings we could also relate to them and see for ourselves how his paranoia overwhelmed him. Paranoiac-Critical In relation to this Dalis paranoia, a psychological method known as paranoiac-critical was created. The Paranoiac-Critical Method was developed by Dali as a way for him to dig out his internal emotions. It was an approach for artists to work throughout their obsessions by ultimately selecting and organizing meticulous objects on the canvas. Dali explained his paranoiac critical as a Spontaneous method of irrational knowledge based on critical and systematic  objectivities of delirious associations and interpretations. When combining a method into a piece of work, usually a functional process of the brain is used to visualise imagery in the work, to combine these into the finished creation. Dali often used double imagery and multiple imagery, which then resulted into unclear images allowing them to be interpreted in different ways. Two good examples of Dalis paranoiac- critical method and double imagery is the The invisible Man and Slave Market with the Disappearing Bust of  Voltaire, for both of these paintings he has cleary used double imagery to trick the eye into thinking there is only one solid image but infact multiple images are present. Disappearing Bust of Voltaire the Invisible Man I see the paranoiac- critical method as being effortless, in my opinion Dali is fooling himself into going insane, while remembering the cause for madness is actually to create a work of art. Dali chose the difficult way by truly going crazy, rather than motivating madness through chemical means. As one of his quotes say, I dont take drugs. I am drugs, Andre Breton poems of Andre Surrealism was an artistic and literary faction that began in 1922 led by the French poet/ critic Andre Breton. Breton was the originator and primary theoretician of Surrealism, and artist association Committed to examining the unfounded, paranormal and intuitive aspects of the human mind. Surrealism sought to reinstate conventional moral and ethical concepts with beliefs of anger, hatred, etc, expressing emotions exaggeratedly that Breton described as exalting the values of poetry, love, and liberty. The surrealists attempted to bypass conscious determination and allow their unconscious take over their works. To explore the subconscious mind, to go beyond the typical thinking person. Dadaism and Surrealism Dada was a movement approximately around the same time as the first world. Dadaism was like a dispute against war, but not war but art. It was an anti- art. Dadaism felt as though the public no longer deserved the privilege of beautiful art that they had become so adapted to because of how the war came upon them, the feeling that people lost their well being and value. So Dadaism intentions were to make art unsightly, ugly. Surrealism emerged from what was still left of Dada (a European society characterized through its so called absurdity and lack of traditional standards, sometimes referred to as (nihilistic) a life without objectives or values. During the early years of the mid 1920s and not like Dada, Surrealism alleged a capable and more positive outlook of art and from the outcome of this it went on to win several converts. Surrealism got its early era as a literary, not artistic, movement in French publications. One thing that Surrealism and Dadaism had in common was their fai th in the understanding of the unconscious mind and also its manifestations, together they understood that throughout the unconscious mind an overabundance of artistic imagery would be unveiled. Together both called automatism. A good example of Dadaism is Marcel Duchamps three dimensional piece The Fountain its not what you would describe as a great piece of art. The Fountain is what Duchamp would call a readymade. This piece is essentially a urinal with the word MUTT printed on it. I think this shows an ideal example of Dada for three reasons: to begin with it is in no way like art before, secondly the resources used are not what you would describe as standard art materials and thirdly this piece makes no sense what so ever. There is an obvious variation between this and Salvador Dalis Persistance Of Memory, in what i would describe as Duchamp slapping this piece together , on the other hand Dali has carefully painted in vast detail his thoughts, his mental image. This painting by Dali is what he would portray as hand- painted dream photographs - reuniting the unconscious mind with realism, reality.

I Hear Them Calling My Name :: essays research papers

The Fear of People   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  People fear not succeeding, negative activities in their environment, death, terrorism, etc, but from a multicultural standpoint, we as a whole fear change. Our human race is also fearful of difference. We fear the difference of our religions, color, race, and sexual preferences. We are afraid of things not in our norm and things that stick out in the world. The issue of change and difference is very prevalent in the book I Hear Them Calling My Name: A Journey Through the New South. This book was well written by Chester Fuller. You can really see this multicultural issue by the way fear controls the characters’ emotions directed towards other people with difference.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In the book, Fuller journeys through the South just after the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s. He is assigned to travel and find any difference or enbetterment in the treatment of blacks since the Civil Rights Movement. His first experience comes when his car breaks down on a highway in deep southern part of North Carolina. He walks to a gas station to get his car towed and the only mechanics/tow men are white. At first he gets the feeling he’s going to be abused by these men. In his mind, Fuller is plotting where he’s going to strike the men when they attack him. Fuller is so scared and set in his ways that he doesn’t look past the man’s race, but is rather intimidated and brainwashed. They arrive back at the station with car and the mechanic asks what seems to be the problem. Fuller thought maybe the fuel pump or something really expensive. The mechanic proceeds back to the car and tinkers with a few things and the car is done is minutes. The mechanic could have possibly put in a new fuel pump among other things and cost Fuller a lot of money, but instead charged a whopping eight dollars. The thing with all this is Fuller’s views of the mechanic the whole time and his emotions of being ready to fight. This amazes me.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Fuller missed this man’s kindness and respect, because of his fear of difference. This fear still occurs today. The only problem is that it exists in many other things than race or color of skin. Socially we have had a major problem with violence in schools. This all occurs because of difference.

Past, Present, And Future Of Computers :: essays research papers

Past, Present, and Future of Computers Imagine being able to do almost anything right from your own living room. You could order a pizza, watch cartoons, or play video games with people from around the entire world. All are possible today with your computer. The beginnings of the computer started off in a rather unique way. It was first used to produce intricate designs with silk, a task far to long a tedious for a human to do constantly. It's really unbelievable how the computers changed from that to what they are now. Today, computers are completely astounding. The possibilities are endless. Who knows where they will take us in the years ahead. The computer is the most influential piece of equipment that has ever been invented. The begginings of the computer are actually kind of strange. It started in the 1800's when a man named Charles Babbage wanted to make a calculating machine. He created a machine that would calculate logarithms on a system of constant difference and record the results on a metal plate. The machine was aptly named the Difference Engine. Within ten years, the Analytical Engine was produced. This machine could perform several tasks. These tasks would be givin to the machine and could figure out values of almost any algebraic equation. Soon, a silk weaver wanted to make very intricate designs. The designs were stored on punch-cards which could be fed into the loom in order to produce the designs requested. This is an odd beginning for the most powerful invention in the world. In the 1930's, a man named Konrad Zuse started to make his own type of computer. Out of his works, he made several good advances in the world of computing. First, he developed the binary coding system. This was a base two system which allowed computers to read information with either a 1 or a 0. This is the same as an on or and off. The on or off functions could be created through switches. These switches were utilized with vacuum tubes. The functions could then be relayed as fast as electrons jumping between plates. This was all during the time of the Second World War and further advancements were made in the area of cryptology. Computer advancements were needed in order for the Allied Coding Center in London to decode encrypted Nazi messages. Speed was of the essence, so scientists developed the first fully valve driven computer. Before this, computers only had a number of valves, none were fully driven by them because of the complexity and difficulty of producing it.

D.H. Lawrences The Rocking-Horse Winner Essay -- D.H. Lawrence Rockin

D.H. Lawrence's The Rocking-Horse Winner 'The Rocking-Horse Winner' by D.H. Lawrence is a shockingly disturbing tale of materialism, wealth, and a mother's absent affection for her children. The family in the story is constantly lured by the sweet temptation of sin. Although the story doesn't directly speak about religion, it is obvious that the family is Christian from the references to Christmas (481) and to God (482). In this story, Lawrence depicts several of the most devious sins of mankind according to religious, particularly Christian, doctrine: greed, sexual deviance, and gambling. The theme of sin is subtly interwoven throughout the short tale by the representations and portrayals of these acts, and Lawrence also makes it clear that all of these transgressions inevitably end in devastation. The story opens with a description of the mother, Hester, a woman who ?knew that at the center of her heart was a hard little place that could not feel love, no, not for anybody? (481), not even for her son, Paul, or her two daughters. The most pressing predicament for the family, however, is not Hester?s indifference but ?the grinding sense of the shortage of money? (481), despite the palpable clues that the family is in fact quite wealthy. This problem is so intense that the house itself ?came to be haunted by the unspoken phrase: There must be more money! There must be more money!? (481). The house and its sinister, ever-present whispering serves to represent the sin of greed, or ?an excessive desire to acquire or possess more that what one needs or deserves? (dictionary.com). The nature of greed seems to be that the more one has, the more one wants, and in the case of ?The Rocking-Horse Winn... ...at God is in objection to the various sins portrayed in ?The Rocking-Horse Winner?, but is Lawrence? This story can be interpreted as a sort of warning to potential sinners, of the dangers that await them if they fail to resist such indulgences. Nevertheless, Lawrence is realistic enough to acknowledge the difficulties of such restraint, and admits within the story that sin can often be unstoppable, and can reach even the most devout of worshipers. ?The Rocking-Horse Winner? is a strong message about the nature of greed, the evils of self-gratification, and the dangers of gambling: all three are sinful acts that lead to devastating consequences, such as madness, ruin, and in this most extreme of cases, death. Revenue Recognition Convergence

Holzmann, Oscar J. â€Å"Revenue recognition convergence: The contract-based model. † Journal Of Corporate Accounting & Finance (Wiley) 22, no. 6 (2011): 87-92. The article â€Å"Revenue Recognition Convergence: The Contract-Based Model† is all about revenue recognition. It begins by explaining the conceptual background information to give you an overview of what revenue recognition is both in the US and internationally. Part of this section also discusses what problems have been found with revenue recognition. Because of these problems, the international and US boards have proposed an adoption of the â€Å"contract-based revenue recognition model. This standard would apply to all contacts between companies and their customers, with some exceptions. There are five steps to this revenue recognition model. These steps are discussed individually within the article. The steps are (1) identify the contract, (2) identify the performance obligation(s), (3) determine the trans action price, (4) allocate the transaction price to separate performance obligations, and (5) recognize revenue. After the descriptions of each step, the article goes on to explain onerous performance obligations, contract cost, presentation, and disclosure. Each of these are important topics and will be on the re-exposure of the exposure draft in the coming years. The book for this class begins talking about revenue recognition in chapter five on page 197. The section of the book that more closely relates to this article starts on pages 203 and its called IASB-FASB Revenue Recognition Project. This explains a little about the joint exposure draft from the IASB and FASB. Also, like the article it discusses the five steps in recognizing revenue. These steps are listed in the above paragraph. It explains each of the steps just enough to understand what it is without confusing you. The section finishes by giving a little more information on the exposure draft. I was in the class group th at did our presentation over revenue recognition, so a lot of this information looked very familiar. It is good to see the same information in different reliable sources. Overall I find this article to be very informative and easy to read and understand. If I didn’t do the group project over the same topic, I would have still been able to understand and comprehend the information in the article.
